How to Choose the Right Flooring for Your House?

How to Choose the Right Flooring for Your House?

Choosing the right flooring for you home is one of the integral decisions in building a new home or remodeling your current home. The floor will set the tone or change the aesthetic of your home. There is not one answer for all individuals, but your choice will depend on how you answer some of the following questions:

Different Types of Flooring

Before determining which floor to choose, here are some of the options you have to choose from:

1.    Hardwood Floors: Wooden floors are a popular choice because they are versatile and can complement any type of interior. Hardwood floors are durable when cared for properly and can be refinished to make them seem brand new.

2.    Engineered Wood Floors: These engineered wood floors have a real wood outer layer with a middle core of heat-formed wood. There is a base layer to help with shrinkage over the life of the flooring. Another plus about engineered wood is that it is durable and easy to install.

3.    Laminate Floors: Laminate flooring is created by layers of high-density fiberboard with a photographic image of some other type of flooring adhered to the top sealed with a wear-resistant coating.

4.    Real Stone Floors: A stone floor will last forever if installed properly. Real stone floors often use slate, limestone, marble, or terracotta tiles to provide different character and design results.

5.    Tile Floors: Tile floors are low maintenance that have different patterns, finishes, and styles to meet your needs and budget. They are very durable with tile being resistant to scratches, moisture, and dents.

6.    Vinyl Floors: Created with polyvinyl chloride and plastics to produce a non-porous flooring option. Vinyl floors can replicate tile, stone, timber, or glass flooring while being comfortable to walk on and last for up to 20 years.

Tips For Choosing the Best Flooring Option for Your Home

Only you can decide what flooring option is best for you, but here are some tips to help you choose:

1.    Consider the location of your home. If you live in a hot and humid area, tile flooring would be a strong choice while carpet would be a better choice for a colder climate.

2.    Consider the function of each room. Is the space an entryway with high foot-traffic that will need a more durable surface? Does the flooring need to be water-resistant because it is in a kitchen and/or bathroom? Will you be barefoot where carpet might be the best option?

3.    Consider your personality. You will have to live with it when everyone else leaves. What do you want your floors to say about you; more natural options if you are a nature person.

4.    Who is doing the install? If you are completing the installation, make sure you choose a flooring that you know how to install correctly. If you are choosing to have professional install your flooring, choose professionals that readily install the type of flooring you choose.

5.    Consider the design of your home. How will the floors fit with the rest of the design of your decor? The style that you have for your home needs to also be reflected in your flooring.

6.    Why are you looking for new flooring? Is your current flooring in ill-repair? Are you tired of vacuuming? Have the kids moved out? Are you expecting children or new pets? Each of these questions will lead you to a different answer, but you will want to consider why you are looking to replace flooring, so you aren’t in the same place in the near future.

Know What You can Afford

Before you begin to shop around for new flooring, set a financial and time number that you need to meet so you aren’t swayed while shopping. Once you have a financial number in mind, ensure that you have budgeted for removal of the old floor, the purchase of the flooring and all materials needed for the new flooring, and how much it will cost to install the new flooring. All of these numbers need to be worked into your budget so there aren’t any surprises along the way.

You will also need to know how much time you can afford on this project. Is this an emergency situation where there are holes in the floor or is this a change out of choice and the timeline can be lengthened.
